For most of us, there is no better place to buy fruits and vegetables than at a farmers' market. These markets are not just venues for buying items but also provide an opportunity for us to learn how food is raised, allow visitors to experience local life, and serve as a spot for locals to discuss the latest community happenings with their neighbors. With a backdrop of the picturesque harbor and visiting boats, the Downtown Waterfront Market is an Elizabeth City tradition celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Billed as a “vine-ripened, just-picked, fresh-made weekly celebration,” the market draws approximately 20 vendors each Saturday that sell homegrown produce like fresh plump strawberries and blueberries, baked and canned foods, homemade sauces, plants, flowers, dog treats, and arts and crafts.
Further enhancing the festive atmosphere are the additional special activities such as cooking demonstrations, scavenger hunts, and corn hole tournaments that change weekly. Visit the Downtown Waterfront Market’s calendar to learn what will be happening this Saturday. Your entire family, including your four-legged pals, will enjoy an outing to the Downtown Waterfront Market, located in Mariners’ Wharf Park and open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. June 1st through August 31st. Check their Facebook page and website to see what’s fresh each week. After browsing the market, window shop at our downtown boutiques and other specialty stores. Keep cool by stopping in at Flour Girls Café and Bakery (102 N. Water St.; 252-331-2230) for some hand-dipped ice cream cones.
