Holiday memories are always some of the most cherished of all, and there's no better way to celebrate the season than a visit to our small town. Come for a weekend to enjoy our hometown hooplas! While visiting, you’ll find personalized gifts, thanks to specialty shops and vintage stores located in our downtown area and throughout the city. And when you are ready to take a break or celebrate Thanksgiving, we have wonderful independently owned restaurants where you can warm up with a southern dish. 'Tis the Season of Shopping
If you are looking for something that’s a cut above the rest, consider one of Elizabeth City’s locally-owned clothing boutiques. Honey & Hive, Shay Leslie and JoVon Fashions are Elizabeth City clothing boutique staples that offer locals and visitors a wide variety of fashion options as well as some great deals. Often you'll find personalized service and touches at locally-owned stores because of the owners wanting to share their love of fashion with others. "I LOVE meeting my shoppers and seeing what their style is and helping them find outfits that bring them joy as well," says Toni Corprew, owner of Southern Twang Boutique (961 Oak Stump Road, Suite C). During the past year, several new boutique clothing stores have opened that you should add to your holiday shopping list. Lowcountry Boutique (406 S. Griffin St.), which opened during the summer, offers its patrons new weekly arrivals of casual and romantic separates and dresses that will add style to any wardrobe. Looking for that perfect t-shirt with a southern twist? If so, Lazzy Frog (605 E. Fearing St.) is a stop you need to add to your list. Offering brands like Southern Strut, Itsa Girl Thing and Elizabeth City t-shirts, this store features some sweet and sassy styles. For more stops like these, visit our shopping section. Don't forget to shop small stores on Saturday, November 25.
Steeped in history, Elizabeth City is filled with many stories so why not purchase an item this year with its own story to tell? There are multiple eclectic antique and vintage shops around Elizabeth City that are fun to browse. The newest shop is EC Design (800 W. Ehringhaus St.), a pop-up antique store that features carefully selected items with panache. Not only will you enjoy hunting for treasures but you might be treated to interesting stories from owners Edward Fearing, an Elizabeth City native with deep family roots in the community, and Mel Powell, owner of the Foreman House B&B. Stop in and stay awhile on Friday and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please note: this establishment accepts checks and cash only. Happy hunting! Feasting on Festive Delights
Feasting on savory Thanksgiving classics and spending time with family and friends makes November special. Whether your Thanksgiving celebration is a small, intimate gathering or a large family get together, sometimes it’s great to leave the cooking and clean up to someone else. Montero’s Restaurant & Bar (414 McArthur Dr.) will host a Thanksgiving Day buffet served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on November 23rd with a menu that is sure to delight your entire gathering—including those who want vegetarian options. Those options include a mushroom Wellington, served with crispy potatoes in puff pastry, as well as mashed sweet potatoes and steamed green beans. Montero’s now offers a plant-based menu including items such as a black bean-stuffed sweet potato—a baked sweet potato filled with delicious black bean chili and finished with a Romesco sauce of grilled vegetables and almonds. Gluten-free and delicious!
While doing your holiday shopping in Elizabeth City, grab a bite at Golden Roots Cafe, located in The Shoppes at Kenyon Bailey (407 McArthur St.). This restaurant’s menu offers many gluten-free and healthy southern-style lunch options. One of our locals highly recommends the buffalo chicken panini or the apple chicken salad. It’s not just the start of the holidays: it’s oyster season, too. You’ve probably heard the old saying that months with an ‘R’ in their name are prime months for eating oysters. And the place to indulge in this coastal delicacy is the C&H Oyster Bar in Elizabeth City. This landmark restaurant has been around since 1967 when Tom Cox, Jr. opened the unassuming eatery at 1524 North Road Street. Diners sit at tables or at the u-shaped bar where the expert shucking staff split and serve fresh oysters as fast as customers can eat ’em. For the non-bivalve crowd, this oyster bar also offers a wide array of fresh seafood, served steamed or fried, as well as sandwiches and other light fare. And be sure to visit Elizabeth City’s newest raw bar, Paradiso Roma Ristorante (35 Camden Causeway), where you’ll be treated to a harbor view while enjoying oysters on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Don’t miss out on the new season!
